Over at the How-To Geek site (my home away from Lifehacker), we've written up a step-by-step guide to help anybody tweak their Windows 7 taskbar, but for power users the process is really quite easy—you'll want to start by grabbing the Windows 7 Start Button Changer and customizing your Start Orb to something other than the default.
To customize the icons for an application, you can simply right-click on the button in the taskbar, and then right-click on the name of the application in the Jump List menu. Once you're in there, you can customize the icon to something else—though you'll sometimes need to unpin and re-pin the shortcut to get it to work.
